You've had a few, but you're fine. You had more to drink last Saturday, and you made it home okay. You even joked about opening the car door and feeling your way home with your foot. Just crank up the AC and the radio to keep you alert and drive about 10 miles under the limit and you will be fine.
Really, you will.

It's come to this

The Phils recent slide is driving preschoolers to drink.
On Monday a video surfaced showing a young boy taking a swig from what appears to be a beer bottle during the Phillies' loss to the Padres on Sunday.
The six-second clip of the boy, donned in a home Phillies jersey, has now drawn the attention of the team.
On Tuesday, Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark said the team hasn't identified the tot or the adults next to him. Clark said it appears to be "a very brief event, probably involving an empty bottle."
I hope the bottle was empty. Where's Mom and Dad?
See the video here.

More evidence that you may have a drinking problem
When you throw up on someone at a Phillies game on purpose.
Captain Michael Vangelo with the Easton Police Department was off-duty when he took his 11 and 15-year-old daughters to the Phillies game Wednesday night.
"When I say disgusting, there was not only insults and vulgarities directed at us, but also beer was thrown at us," Vangelo told CBS 3. Unfortunately, the evening only got worse.
"I actually heard the individual behind me say, 'I'm gonna get sick', then I couldn't believe what I saw. He actually had his fingers down his mouth and into his throat to make himself vomit. He vomited and lurched forward and it was hitting my daughter," Vangelo explained.
Puking up on the daughter of a police officer. I've been to a few Phils games at the Vet vs the Mets, and with all the Mets fans coming down from North Jersey it can get rough in the stands. Serving Ortlieb's in wastepaper buckets didn't help either, but my issues in this area are well documented.

How to tell if you have a drinking problem
Is your family worried about your drinking?
Is your drinking causing problems at work?
Do you have money problems because of your drinking?
Are there times you can't account for, where you don't remember things you have done?
Have you ever thrown up on the hood of a '76 Volare?
Have you ever woken up in a stranger's backyard?
Have you ever tried to resuscitate a dead animal?
State police have charged a central Pennsylvania man with public drunkenness after he was seen giving mouth-to-mouth "resuscitation" to a long-dead opossum along a highway.
Trooper Jamie Levier says several witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald Wolfe, of Brookville, near the animal along Route 36 in Oliver Township Thursday about 3 p.m. The trooper says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a seance, while another saw the mouth-to-mouth attempt.
Levier says Wolfe was "extremely intoxicated" and "did have his mouth in the area of the animal's mouth, I guess".
Oliver Township is about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

It's my fault, Part 1
Sports and news talk radio are running ads about the Gasparilla Pirate Fest next Saturday. The closest I can compare this to in style and temperment is Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
These ads are reminding attendees that, for the first time, local laws concerning underage drinking and public winoism will be enforced. You see, the parade runs down Bayshore Blvd, where there are many very nice homes owned by folks with the money to buy them. Well, last year there was one too many guys pooping in the front yard bushes, and complaints from homeowners have begotten a renewed effort by cops to crack down.
And it's my fault. It's also my fault that beer sales are cut off after the seventh inning and the fourth quarter of sporting events. Most of you reading this have no problem going to the game, drinking a few beers (not as many as you like- what are they $50 a piece at the ballpark?) and going home. But because of guys like me who couldn't control themselves the rest of you have to be treated like eight year olds.
New Jersey raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 back in the 1980's? I own that one, too.
Okay, maybe I share some responsibility with the law firm of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe, since fear of litigation is probably motivating some of these ballpark rules. ("My client was held down by concession employees and had MGD poured down his throat.")
That's not the only thing that's my fault. But that's for Part 2.

Christmas @ The Spider's Church

The top pic is our music team (along with some other volunteers) singing some special music last Sunday. That's me on the right with the other tenor. Most of the folks in this pic are real musicians; I'm just bluffing me way in. This pic makes it look like I can actually read music. NOT!
Actually I can read a little music. For example, there are two melodies to "Away in a Manger". I can tell which melody I'm singing by the sheet music.
In the next pic you can see that I haven't cut my hair since May. Well, it's coming off after Christmas. Too high maintenance. The beard wasn't gray until the 2000 election. The need for bifocals make glasses more practical (and cheaper) than contact lenses.
This pic also shows the difficulties that I have finding a dress shirt that fits. I am a laundry bag with legs. A shirt with a neck big enough for me to wear a tie will be a dress on me. But then the occasions of my tie-wearing are rare.
I wanted to end this by talking about the place these pics were taken, Hope Bible Church in Tampa. Sure, the preaching is standard evangelical. Our pastors just open the Bible and talk about what's in it.
But good preaching is a waste in a place that is unwelcoming. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13 that if he had all knowledge and all faith but no love he was nothing. This place and these good people are a sanctuary for me.
I really couldn't tell you how I am staying sober. Many have studied God's Word more than I, have prayed than I, have gone to more AA meetings than I and have stumbled. In this area I am totally at the mercy of the Almighty. Maybe the fact that these good people have taken me in as one of there own has something to do with it.

I am my pastor's go-to guy....
..for all things alcohol-related. I have been asked to explain proof as a measurement of alcohol content and what is considered a high proof. My pastor had never heard of Everclear until last month.
This is why this ex-wino was walking down the beer aisle at the supermarket. (Is beer sold in supermarkets in NJ?). I was keeping current on any new beverages now are on the market.
This is when I saw something that puzzled me. Old Milwaukee NA, as in non-alcoholic. I occasionally enjoy an O'Douls, but in removing the alcohol from Old Mil you remove the only reason one would drink it. What other cheap drunks have become just cheap? Non-alcoholic Pabst Blue Ribbon? Red, White & Blue?

All I did was drink beer on three continents...
..but I told the truth about it.
On a sultry day in July 2008, Marine Sgt. David W. Budwah strode in his battle fatigues to the front of a picnic pavilion to tell three dozen young boys what he did during the war.
With his clear gaze, rigid posture and muscled, tattooed arms, Budwah looked every inch the hero he claimed to be. He said he was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan when a homemade grenade exploded, wounding his face and arm when he dove to shield a buddy from the blast.
He urged the boys, ages 9-12, to take pride in themselves, their country and its warriors.
"We're here to make sure of the freedom you have every day," Budwah told his audience at Camp West Mar, a wooded American Legion compound about 60 miles northwest of Washington.
Spencer Shoemaker, then 10, was so impressed he had his picture taken with Budwah and kept a treasured newspaper clipping about the visit.
"What he said made me feel like I wanted to join the Marines," Spencer said.
But the Marines say Budwah is a liar, a fraud and a thief. They are court-martialing the 34-year-old Springhill, La., native, alleging he was never in Afghanistan, wasn't wounded and didn't earn the combat medals he wore - or the many privileges he enjoyed.
Budwah joined the Marines in October 1999 and spent nearly all of the next six years with a radio communications unit in Okinawa, Japan, according to the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va., where Budwah has been stationed since February 2006.
Back when I was stationed at Homestead AFB, I thought about wearing a few of my dad's old WWII campaign ribbons for an open ranks inspection, but I guessed correctly that colonels have no sense of humor.
What could I tell thses kids? "I bravely drank Romer Pilsner on Kaiserstrasse in defense of my country."

I don't see you guys rating the kind of mate I'm contemplating
One night in Bangkok Calcutta makes the hard guys humble.
John Daly was unavailable for comment.
A leading French chess player turned up drunk and dozed off after just 11 moves in an international tournament in Kolkata, losing the round on technical grounds, domestic media reported Friday."Technical grounds" means that he fell asleep at the table and his clock ran out. He later protested because his opponent had fourteen giant pink rooks that floated off the chessboard and circled the room in defiance of the rules of chess.

More Beer and Politicians
Philadelphia Liquors is on Philadelphia Ave, the main drag in Egg Harbor City. Back when Carter was president I had once purchased adult beverages from there. But I never stole any.
Charges were dropped Wednesday against Galloway Township Councilman Bill Ackerman for supposedly stealing a large number beer cans from a local liquor store through two or three daily trips during a five-month period.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On each trip, he would pay for a can or two and, surveillance cameras later revealed, pocket at least one more before driving about 2 miles home to his house. That sometimes happened two or three times in a day, she said.
This guy is a Republican, but he didn't blame Dems for his troubles. It sounds like he is trying to own it.
Budweiser is $2.39 a can in NJ? In my hood in Tampa you can get a quart of Old English 800 (It's got your number!) for $1.39. No wonder all the street winos are down here.

all we need is a ten and five-er,
a car and key and a sober driver.

This is rich.
A Westport lawmaker who voted to hike the state sales and alcohol taxes was spotted brazenly piling booze in his car - adorned with his State House license plate - in the parking lot of a tax-free New Hampshire liquor store, the Herald has learned.
Michael J. Rodrigues’ blue Ford Crown Victoria, emblazoned with his “House 29” Massachusetts license plate, was parked outside a Granite State liquor store on Interstate-95 South over the weekend, according to a witness who provided pictures to the Herald.
The witness, who requested anonymity, claimed he approached Rodrigues, noted his State House plate, and asked if he was on personal or official business. Rodrigues, who was loading booze into his car, snapped “mind your own business,” the witness said.
So a politician who voted to raise taxes on booze in Mass is busted getting it tax free in NH. And check out his defense:
But in an online interview with The Standard-Times in New Bedford, he acknowledged buying the booze during a bathroom stop while he and his wife were on a weekend getaway in New Hampshire.
He also blamed the brouhaha on “Republican demagoguery.”
“Unfortunately, I think that’s why the Republican Party is in such bad shape in Massachusetts,” Rodrigues is quoted as saying. “The electorate here is smart enough to figure out what they’re up to.”
The GOP in Mass has the power to make Dems drink tax-free beer? Mitt Romney must be da man! And as a Mormon I don't think he is a beer drinker, tax-free of not.

40 years ago today...
... was the launch of Apollo 11, the mission that took men to the surface of the moon. But that's not what I want to talk about.
40 years ago this Saturday, while our brave astronauts were hurtling through space toward the moon, Senator Edward Kennedy was also hurtling through space, launched off the Dike Bridge toward the waters of a channel on Chappaquiddick Island. While our astronaunts all made it home safely, one traveler on Ted's craft was not so fortunate.
If there were three cable networks back in 1969, he would have never survived politically.

Exorcism, It's not just a Catholic thing
Non-Catholics do it, too.
A Connecticut church has outraged gay rights advocates by posting a video of members performing an apparent exorcism of a teen's "homosexual demons."
The 20-minute video was posted on YouTube before it was taken down.
Gay youth advocate Robin McHaelen (mih-KAY'-lehn) says the video appears to show abuse. She says she plans to report it to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
The boy confirms he is 16 but otherwise has declined to comment.
The Rev. Patricia McKinney of Manifested Glory Ministries in Bridgeport says he is 18 and came to the church on his own seeking help.
She denies the church is prejudiced and says it took care of the youth.
There is nothing in Scripture to support an exorcism for this. Some people believe that their bad behavior is because of demon possession. This is a copout for those who do not want to take responsibility for their struggles with sin. There is no demon of gayness. I was not possessed by the demon of winoism; I was a drunk. If you are a married guy and your eye and or other body parts wander (like to Argentina) you don't have the demon of whorism. You're just the governor of South Carolina.
If you are doing things, or thinking about doing things that you know are wrong, well you belong to a very large club. As a member in good standing I greet you. Which is why this verse is in the Bible:
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
Face it, God knows. And you know God knows. And He knows you know He knows. And you know He knows you know He knows. Ya know? So let's peel off the layers and have an honest conversation with the One who knows.

Your Tax Dollars at Work
Isn't there a need for this in our country?
The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will pay $2.6 million in U.S. tax dollars to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly on the job.
I wonder why they drink? Maybe it's because they are in a profession which is not know to build up one's self-esteem? Ya think?
What tags should I use for this post? How about these?

The Chief
The Chief is my eldest brother who is a retired chief petty officer (CPO) living in Jacksonville with Mrs. Chief. The Chief has only one kidney (he actually has two, the other being in my little sister for the last 13 years. My brothers and I were vying to be the donor but the Chief’s kidney was deemed most worthy of our sister).
Around the time he gave up his kidney he gained a wife. A wonderful Catholic lady. And here is where this tale begins.
The Chief was going to go out with two of his Navy buddies for a bachelor celebration. Being a sober person I was asked to drive him to these destinations. Having been sober for ten years at the time, I saw some delivery systems for adult beverages of which I was unfamiliar. For example, waitresses would carry test tube racks containing test tubes filled with colored liquids. I believe these were called “shooters”.
After visiting a few of these places, the Chief was muevo boracho. That’s when his buddies talked him into going to a strip joint.
This was going to be tough for me. Since I got sober and started trying to get my situation straight with Jesus I’ve been staying out of those kinds of places. But I made a promise to the Chief and I had to keep it.
While driving to the strip joint I prayed to God. “God, I do not know how You are going to do it, but I need to get bailed out of this.”
Friends, there is surely a God who involves Himself with the affairs of men. The Lord answered my prayer by reaching down from heaven and touching my brother.
And the Chief threw up all over the inside of my car. He apologized, told me to take him home right before passing out.
I was never as happy as I was cleaning it up. Thank You Jesus for the puke!

Rest in peace
This is horrible news.
Yeah, instead of staying to help, or at least calling 911, he took off. (update - in doing so, he also abandoned his own passenger, who was injured in the collision.) He tested over the legal limit. He's done so before, according to the story, and was driving on a suspended license when he ran through the light and killed three young people.
On top of all that, a fan of the Angels' has just died of injuries received in a fight at the stadium on opening day.
There aren't enough words in me to describe how sad this all is, and how angry I am at that incredibly selfish and careless snot driving the van.
updated... with a great interview with Adenhart by Rich Lederer of the always-excellent Baseball Analysts. AND, with the "winoism" tag, as per Spider's comment.
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed early Thursday by a suspected drunk driver just hours after the rookie made his first start of the season.A minivan driven by one Andrew Gallo ran a red light and plowed the car in which Adenhart rode as a passenger, killing him, a second passenger, and the driver. A third passenger is still in critical condition. Gallo promptly bailed and tried to flee on foot, only to be caught thirty minutes later.

This guy is a country song
You've hear a multitude of prayers on my behalf
I pray that one more is not too much to ask
I've tried to fight this battle by myself
But it's a war that I can't win without Your help
To-night I'm as low as any man can go
I'm down and I can't fall much farther
And once upon a time You turned the water into wine
Now on my knees I'm turning to You Father
Could You help me turn the wine back into water

John Daly out of the PGA for six months.
John Daly smashed one tee shot off the top of a beer can during a pro-am. At another tournament, he returned from a rain delay with Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden as his caddie. And his most memorable photo this year came in an orange jail suit, eyes half-closed.
Daly said Wednesday that such unwelcome publicity is why the PGA Tour suspended him for six months.
The two-time major champion confirmed his suspension to The Associated Press, calling this the low point of an 18-year career during which he has made as much news off the course as he has with his prodigious game.
Now it is clear in God's Word the He made wine to gladden men's hearts. And alcohol itself is not evil. Jesus made the stuff out of water. Paul told Timothy to drink some to ease his stomach.
The problem is the stain of sin upon humanity. One of sin's manifestations is that guys like John Daly and me need to stay away from that which most of humankind can enjoy.
Though I did learn one fact about Daly.
He drew the most attention from the night in jail. Daly told the AP that his friends called police when they feared he had passed out, claiming they were unaware he sleeps with his eyes open when he's had too much to drink.
I pray that one more is not too much to ask

Raindrops Keep Faling On My Head
Well, maybe not raindrops.
Jersey City councilman Steven Lipski said he "resolved not to touch alcohol again."
The New Jersey councilman who allegedly urinated on a crowd of concertgoers from the balcony of a Washington, D.C. nightclub swore off booze on Sunday -- two days after he was busted for the embarrassing stunt.
Jersey City councilman Steven Lipski has reportedly been arrested for urinating on a crowd of concertgoers from the balcony of a Washington D.C. nightclub.
"I've resolved not to touch alcohol again," two-term Jersey City councilman Steve Lipski told the Fox 5 New York.
He went on to say that the incident was "deeply humiliating, very embarrassing" and troubling," the Daily News reported.
The 44-year-old Democratic councilman refused to admit to the lewd stunt.
"I can't comment on that," he told Fox5 News. "I'm going to continue to do all the good things, and I'm not going to let this overshadow me."
Lipski was in D.C. to see a Grateful Dead tribute band and was spotted relieving himself by one of the club's staffers around 9:50 p.m., club sources told the Daily News. He was charged with simple assault. Guys, I've done this. But I was a polite drunk. I always made sure that the landing zone was clear.
"I've resolved not to touch alcohol again." Do you know how many times I've said that? Does this guy know what needs to be done? Or, as our Lord would say, is he ready to count the cost?

The Operative Phrase...
....is "alcohol was involved".
MADEIRA BEACH -- Dale Roberts thought his new pistol wasn't working properly, Pinellas deputies say, so he decided to test it.
Around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday Roberts, in jest, pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger, deputies say. It turns out the pistol worked well enough to send a .25 caliber bullet into his skull.
The 20-year-old was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was expected to recover.
Roberts' girlfriend, Ambert Howell, also 20, was not injured. The accidental shooting occurred in the kitchen of their one-bedroom apartment at 107 145th Avenue, and alcohol was involved, according to deputies.

He Wasn't a Heavy Drinker
….so says his girlfriend.
Eric Morris had spent time in prison and was working toward a better life.
But he died this week after downing more than 20 shots of cherry-flavored vodka in a shot-for-shot drinking contest with a co-worker at a Seffner bikini bar.
His girlfriend, Amber Rust, said he wasn't a big drinker.
"Two to three beers a night," she said. "That was it."
The 26-year-old took a challenge Tuesday from a co-worker at Angels Show Bar. The challenger stopped drinking shots after the fifth round, she said. Morris continued.
Now the Bible says that God provides wine, ‘which makes man’s heart glad” (Psalm 104:15), and many of us, as demonstrated by Mr. Bingley, enjoy this gift in the manner in which it is intended.
The Bible does not prohibit the drinking of alcohol. It does talk about not doing what this guy at the bikini bar did. And one of the consequences of the fallen world is that some folks like this guy (and of course, me) need to deny ourselves this pleasure.
This bar is 400 yards from my place of employment. It is a bikini bar, where the dancers have to keep some cloth on so that they can have a liquor license and sell shots of cherry vodka. I bring this up because the girlfriend's name, Amber Rust, sounds like a stage name.
